TPS Member Dawn Umstot takes pictures every year for her Tacoma Yacht Club’s Winter Vashon Race that starts east of the Point Defiance Ferry Terminal and heads West to round Vashon Island. With the new Dune Peninsula Park , spectators can watch the race starts where typically between 50-80 sailboats will participate. These race starts can be exciting and beautiful with the right wind conditions. If the winds are right, the boats will put their colorful spinnaker sails up just after the start, which is just stunning. Here’s the details from Dawn:
When: Saturday December 7th
Schedule: approx 9am-11am
Sailboat racers only care about wind. They will race in rain, snow and cold. Who knows what the weather will be like on race day. The biggest disappointment is when there is low wind or no wind. They will postpone the race and wait for the wind to fill in which can be 1/2 hour to 2 hours. Be aware that just because it’s foggy, there may still be great wind. You just never know until you get out there.
If you are planning on going, you can give Dawn your cell phone number via ‘firstname.lastname@example.org’ and she will text out status updates throughout the morning.
